Gorilla trekking in Rwanda requires a moderate level of fitness, but most people who prepare appropriately can comfortably enjoy the experience.

Treks take place in the montane forests of Volcanoes National Park, where the terrain can include steep slopes, muddy trails and uneven ground. The length and difficulty of each trek varies depending on where the assigned gorilla family is located that day. Some groups may be reached within an hour, while others require a longer hike through dense forest.

Before every departure, ORYX provides guests with detailed guidance on fitness, clothing and equipment to help them prepare. Experienced park rangers and trackers set a comfortable pace, with regular stops along the way, ensuring the trek is enjoyable for participants of varying abilities.

Rainforest photography often involves lower light levels, making cameras with excellent high-ISO performance particularly beneficial.

Fast lenses are particularly valuable in Rwanda’s forests. Wider apertures allow you to work comfortably beneath the canopy while beautifully isolating your subject from the background.

Rwanda offers rewarding wildlife photography throughout the year, but the country’s drier seasons generally provide the most comfortable trekking conditions.

The primary dry seasons typically occur between June and September and December to February. During these months, forest trails are usually firmer, making gorilla trekking easier and reducing the likelihood of heavy rainfall during hikes.

The wetter months transform Rwanda’s forests into vibrant green landscapes, creating beautiful photographic conditions with lush vegetation and soft, diffused light. While trails may become more challenging, many photographers appreciate the atmospheric rainforest conditions that these seasons provide.
